Penang’s Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow, has expressed his appreciation for Barisan Nasional (BN), recognizing the coalition’s essential contribution to fostering political stability in the state. Since assuming office in May 2018, Chow, a key figure in the Democratic Action Party (DAP), has been at the forefront of the state’s development and governance, and he credited the partnership between DAP’s Pakatan Harapan (PH) and BN as central to Penang’s steady progress.
In his speech at the Penang MIC Deepavali open house, Chow praised BN’s role, especially during the 2023 state elections, where the co
alition’s support played a crucial part in the success of his administration. He specifically mentioned BN’s component parties, such as MIC, for their dedication in working alongside the state government to implement policies that benefit the people.
"Political stability is the backbone of any government’s ability to deliver. This partnership has allowed us to focus on advancing both social and economic development, ultimately improving the lives of Penang’s residents," Chow said.
He went on to underscore the importance of unity within the government, emphasizing that the collaboration between PH, BN, and other parties had proven to be a powerful force for good governance. Chow also commended Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his leadership in building trust both domestically and internationally.
Chow also took a moment to recognize the leadership of Penang BN and Umno’s Musa Sheikh Fadzir, whose efforts have strengthened the ties between BN and PH. "The results of the 2023 state elections speak volumes about the strength of our cooperation. Our unity has paved the way for unprecedented successes," he added.
In the 2023 state elections, the PH-BN alliance secured 29 seats, while the opposition, Perikatan Nasional (PN), won 11. DAP managed to retain all 19 seats it contested, PKR secured seven out of 13, and Amanah retained one of its two seats. BN won two of the six seats it contested, and Sungai Acheh assemblyman Rashidi Zinol was appointed to Chow’s state executive council.
Looking forward, Chow emphasized the need to continue building upon the strong foundation of cooperation to tackle future challenges, including the upcoming general election in three years.
Chow also expressed his gratitude for being part of Penang MIC’s first Deepavali celebration in 15 years, a milestone that was celebrated with a special gesture from the party. MIC’s state chief J Dhinagaran and other party members surprised Chow with an elaborate flower garland in honor of his 65th birthday, which had been celebrated the previous day.
Former Penang Chief Minister and DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng was also in attendance, further emphasizing the united front and shared commitment to Penang’s continued progress.
